Important Changes to VPN Remote Access

Posted in: featured by mg344 on Thu, 11/29/2012 - 14:06

On Wednesday, November 28, Yale Information Technology Services made changes to the VPN infrastructure and user permissions on the VPN service.  Some computers and mobile devices have been impacted by the infrastructure changes.  Some individuals that previously had access to online library resources may no longer have access as a result of new University policies

Infrastructure Changes:
The  L2TP VPN service was disabled at though it was later restored on Friday, November 30.  Many users of Apple mobile devices have been using this configuration with the server address “vpnwindows.yale.edu”.  Although the L2TP VPN is currently working, ITS has plans to retire the service version soon.   The ITS website recommends using the Cisco AnyConnect client for iOS 4.x and above device.  The Cisco AnyConnect app is free through the Apps store.  Here are instructions from ITS for configuring Cisco AnyConnect: http://its.yale.edu/sites/default/files/imce/AnyConnect-app-Pad-iPhone.pdf

It is possible to use the SSL VPN (access.yale.edu) with SOME Android phones.  Hardware-specific Cisco AnyConnect clients exist for many of the newer Android models.  Once the app is downloaded, simply enter “access.yale.edu” in the Server Address field to create a connection to the Yale VPN.

All computers users should now be using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client on their Windows or Mac.  If you have the client but are having difficulties connecting, try reinstalling the client software.  To install or reinstall the AnyConnect client on your Mac or Windows computer, go to http://access.yale.edu

The ITS Help Desk can assist you with VPN problems.  Contact them by one of these means:

Changes in User Access:

  • For questions regarding VPN access (including who is eligible) contact the ITS Help Desk at this phone number 203-785-3200. The following link outlines the policy regarding VPN Eligibility & Access:
    http://www.yale.edu/ppdev/Procedures/its/1601-PR-04.pdf

  • For any questions regarding JSTOR, the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) is available to answer any questions, and specifically, you can direct people to peter.sims@yale.edu.

  • Any privileges related questions can be directed through the Ask Yale Library link or you can forward questions to laura.sider@yale.edu.

If there are any exceptional circumstances where people feel they should have VPN access, there will be a special application process through ITS, where someone applying for special dispensation will be required to have a sponsor and fulfill certain criteria. If such a request comes to any of you directly, there is a VPN exception form that you can ask the person to fill out at the following link: http://its.yale.edu/forms-policies/forms/vpn-access-request-form

Award winning film "Twero: The Road to Health" Showing on Nov. 5th

Posted in: news by mg344 on Sat, 10/27/2012 - 18:32

Don't miss the chance to view this film by 2012 Yale School of Medicine graduate Michael Otremba, MD.  This documentary follows a Ugandan journalist who investigates how patients often must seek care outside of an underfunded and overburdened public system. Desperate for help, patients are turning to an unregulated private health sector, where services are accessible, but at a significant cost. When patients cannot pay
their medical bills, doctors are resorting to imprisoning them.  Dr. Otremba, currently a Postdoctoral Associate at the Yale School of Medicine,  received the "Innovative Learning through Electronic Theses & Dissertations" from the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in August.  Most recently, he won best documentary feature at this years' NYLA International FIlm Festival.  You can read more about his work in the latest issue of Yale Medicine

The film will be shown on Monday, November 5 at 6:10pm in Room 129 at the Yale Law School.  A Q&A session with the director follows. This showing is sponsored by the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights.

StatLab Consultant Hours in the Medical Library

Posted in: news by mg344 on Sun, 09/16/2012 - 16:41

The Medical Library and the Yale StatLab have joined forces to offer StatLab consulting services one afternoon a week on the medical campus.  StatLab Consultant Reuben Ng, a doctoral candidate in the School of Public Health,  will be available in the Medical Library Wednesdays from 1:30 to 5:30pm.  The consultants desk is located on the back of the Information Desk.

StatLab Consultants work in a question-and-answer mode to help people with particular questions that come up in their research or classroom activities using statistical software and statistical methodologies. Consultants can offer advice ranging from:

  • "How should I enter to my data" to
  • "What statistical program is best for my project" to
  • "How do I get the program to run the analysis I want"

The consultants cannot provide long tutorial sessions. The consultants can help describe and explain methods and procedures, but they cannot prescribe particular methodologies or interpret results of analyses.

For assistance at other times, contact the StabLab at (203) 432-3278 or visit the Consultant’s desk at CSSSI in the Kline Biology Tower, 219 Prospect Street.  Consultants are available Sunday through Friday at CSSSI.  Further information is at www.yale.edu/statlab

Temporary E-Journal Search Problem

New Printing & Copying System

Posted in: featured by mg344 on Tue, 07/24/2012 - 09:14

The YalePrint UniPrint system is now fully functional and the preferred system for printing, copying and scanning in the Medical Library.  This change brings us in line with printing and copying services in other Yale Libraries and campus locations.  CCP, our former vendor, has generously agreed to keep one printer and one copier onsite through October 15 in order to accomodate those users who still have funds on the copycards.  We encourage you to use your current balances as soon as possible and to not add additional value to CCP copycards.

YPPS UniPrint accounts are required to use the YalePrint/UniPrint system.  Yale University students, faculty and staff can use their NetID or ID card card to access and pay for their print jobs, copies and scans to email.  Yale-New Haven Hospital employees and visitors can easily create an account online with YPPS.  A UniPrint Account Kiosk located in the Information Room makes it easy to create accounts and add value to existing accounts.  Here are some basic facts and features of the system:

  • Students who currently receive copycards from the Library will have their UniPrint accounts credited with funds
  • Others can easily create online accounts, adding value with a credit card, debit card (must have MC or Visa logo) or PTAEO
  • All devices are multifunction printer/copier/scanners (scanning is to email only)
  • Printing from laptops is easy.   Installation instructions at http://ypps.yale.edu/printdrivers
  • Pricing: Double-sided (duplex) copying and printing is encouraged and is the default print option. Double-sided b/w copies and prints will on average cost $0.06 ($0.10 for the first side and $0.02 for the second side). Single-sided b/w prints and copies will cost $0.10.  Full color is billed at $ 0.30 per page and scanning is $ 0.01 per page

See the Medical Library Printing and Photocopying page for more information.

Please direct your comments or questions about this change to Mark Gentry, mark.gentry@yale.edu

Posted in: news by mg344 on Wed, 06/08/2011 - 10:06

There is a new interface for the popular Micromedex Health Series but users should have little trouble adjusting to the new look and feel.  All links on the Library Website and YNHH Clinical Workstations will be changed before May 31 when the old interface goes away.  The new URL is http://www.thomsonhc.com/micromedex2/librarian/.

Micromedex 2.0 expands options for mobile devices with an online version for Android, WindowsMobile and Blackberry devices.  iPhone/iTouch/iPad users also have the option of installing the Micromedex Drug Information & the Micromedex Drug Interactions apps.  For details on these mobile options, see the description on our Mobile Applications page.

Please note that Micromedex 2.0 is not compatible with Firefox 4.  You must use Internet Explorer, an older version of Firefox or another compatible browser for consistent performance with Micromedex 2.0.
