This year’s talk, “From Genes to Healing: The Science of Stem Cell Explained” will be given by Haifan Lin, Ph.D., the Eugene Higgins Professor of Cell Biology and founding Director of Yale Stem Cell Center. The lecture will take place on April 29th at 4:00, in room SHM L 115. Please register ahead of time.

Dr. Lin studies the self-renewing mechanism of stem cells, stem cell-related cancers, and germline development.  He made key contributions to the demonstration of stem cell self-renewing division and the proof of the stem cell niche theory. He discovered the Argonaute-Piwi gene family and its function in stem cell self-renewal, germline development, and oncogenesis.  He is also a discoverer of Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA), a discovery hailed by Science as one of the 10 Breakthroughs in 2006. Recently, he discovered two new paradigms of genome-wide regulation at epigenetic and post-transcriptional levels as mediated by the Piwi-piRNA pathway.

He is also Professor of Genetics, of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, and of Dermatology at Yale.  Dr. Lin is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science, and a Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Science.
