The Medical Historical Library is pleased to announce that Kellan McNally, a doctoral student in the Social Work and Anthropology program at Wayne State University, is the recipient of the 2026-2027 Stanley B. Burns M.D. Fellowship for the Study of Medical and Postmortem Photographic History. His project, “Half Tones, Half- Truths, and Practices of Mental Health Representation,” examines how state hospitals and mental asylums used photography in their annual reports and other publicity materials, and how these images were circulated and repurposed in clinical publications and other settings.
The Library also awarded two Ferenc Gyorgyey/Stanley Simbonis YSM’57 Research Travel Grants for 2026-2027. Jessica Dandona, Professor of Art History at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, will explore the Library’s anatomical flap book collection for her book manuscript in progress, “The Book of the Body: 19th-Century Flap Anatomies in Motion.” Jim Downs, the Gilder Lehrman-National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Civil War Studies and History at Gettsyburg College, will research the 19th century journal collection and historical infectious disease literature for his project entitled “Dead in the Water: Toward a New Origin of Public Health.”
