Desktop Computers in the Library

The Medical Library has computer clusters in the Information Room and the Computer Resource Laboratory (CRL), our 24 hour room. All computers have Internet access although installed software varies among the cluster (see details below).  Windows Research Workstations located toward the front of the Information Room are open to all library users without the need to login.  Productivity Workstations, both Windows and Apple computers, are located toward the rear of the Information Room and are only accessible by Yale University students, faculty and staff. Research Workstations (no logon required) have Internet browsers and basic software including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Professional.  Productivity computers have a great number of software packages including a number of statistical applications.

The CRL is a 24x7 room on the basement level. Access is through the library whenever the library is open. When the library is closed the CRL can be accessed through an outside door in the back corridor off the main Sterling Hall of Medicine stairway.  A Yale University ID card and NetID credentials are required to enter the room and go login to the computers.

All Windows computers have combo CD/DVD/DVD burner drives.  Newer models of iMacs do not come with drives but an Apple SuperDrive can be checked out from the Circulation Desk for use in Library cluster machines.   All computers (and most monitors) have USB ports for personal USB portable storage devices. Each computer is configured with common browser plug-ins, such as: Adobe Acrobat Reader, Quicktime, Real Player, Shockwave, Flash and Windows Media Player. All run Symantec Antivirus software.

The Library has two scanning stations in the Computer Resource Lab's Digital Imaging Center. One of the CRL digital imaging workstations runs Windows and the other is a Mac. There is also a Windows scanning station in the Information Room. All 3 of the imaging workstations have full featured graphics creation and OCR software. The CRL has another high-end Mac Pro with graphics and video production software including and Final Cut Pro.  See below for specific details.

The Library also has a laptop computer loaner program exclusively for medical center students. These computers may be used in the library or can be checked out for up to three days at a time.
